Opening Reception “Renaissance Potter” John McCoy at Artisans on the Avenue

Saturday, December 05, 2015, 06:00pm - 09:00pm

John McCoy is an established potter who started his journey at the age of seventeen. John has a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics. For many years he oversaw and taught as the head professor of the ceramics department at Florida Atlantic University. John has witnessed the growth and flourishing of his students, many of whom continued their studies in prestigious graduate programs around the country and because of the admiration they have for John many of his former students still keep in touch with him. John retired after 36 years as a professor, but he was not ready to retire from the world of pottery.

As a master potter and ceramicist John specializes in functional work throwing on a potter’s wheel. He transforms clay into many beautiful works of art and specializes in mixing and creating his own glazes. His work includes functional teapots, cups, bowls, covered jars, plates, casseroles among many more one of a kind pieces. John’s pottery is classically inspired, elegant with a contemporary twist. As John says” I like to make pottery that will get used every day. A piece can sit on a shelf and look pretty, but it comes alive when it is a part of our daily life.” People are starting to appreciate handmade objects once again. They realize that a beautifully cooked meal is enhanced by being served on a handmade plate or serving dish. Every day should be a special occasion.”

John works every day from his home studio that overlooks pines and fruit trees and shows his work at Artisans on the Ave in Lake Worth.

This is a free event refreshments will be served
