Training in traditional Turkish arts allows her to employ a highly refined sense of pattern in her work. “I use decorative pattern and social content to achieve a balance of two contrasting elements. This combination emphasizes the power of decoration over language.” Kocabasi's latest series focuses on the relationship between humans and other animals showing both humor and frustration. Sibel Kocabasi, holds a B.F.A degree in Turkish Traditional Arts, Kilim and Rug design, from Marmara University of Fine Arts in Istanbul, Turkey. In 1996, following her graduation, she moved to the United States; where she has gone on to receive her M.F.A in painting in 2005 from the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including a recent exhibition of drawings in Japan. Her work can also be found in many private collections.
